RAJO (named after the Somali word for hope) is a youth and family empowerment project to help build resilience in the Somali-Canadian community.
The RAJO Project aims to address:
- Issues of acculturation, integration, identity and refugee trauma
- poverty, isolation and substance abuse
- Factors that increase youth’s vulnerability to mental health issues and anti-social behaviour.
The RAJO Project integrates youth into schools, meaningful recreation and cultural activities, as well as employment programs, and promotes healthy family functioning. Mental health counsellors and trained Somali outreach staff will provide positive cultural modelling, encourage membership in Somali and broader community activities, and facilitate positive peer relationships and integration in the community.
